I purchased these as an alternative to my heavier, insulated Crispi's. When I first opened the box, there was an overwhelming plastic/chemical smell so I set them outside for about 24 hours which seemed to do the job.
I bought the same size as I wear for my other shoes. They are ridiculously difficult to get on the first dozen times...then, only very hard to put on. I can't imagine anyone has a shoehorn, but I wished they included one. It's such a pain, that I second guess wearing them just for that reason. Once they are on, they are comfortable and I haven't had any issues with blisters/hot spots (while wearing alpaca socks). I like the fairly minimalist nature of the boots while still offering decent protection against Arizona thorns and sharp rocks.
I've taken them on walks with my dog, hikes with weight, and finally out on a hunt trip last weekend. Aside from the absolute nightmare of putting these on, they held up well in the backcountry. A few times, I wished for heavier lugs on the tread, but it was rarely an issue. I didn't come across any water so I can't attest to the advertised water resistance. I twice had an opportunity to stalk an animal in dried pine needles, pine cones, and sticks and noticed a much quieter foot fall as I moved around (even with my pack on). I could feel the ground and any obstacles much more easily and was able to stop from loudly crushing a couple pine cones mid-step.
However, while I tried to be as quiet as possible, I noticed an audible squeak coming from both shoes as they flexed. I think it was the BOA system against the top of the shoe but I couldn't seem to make it stop by tightening/loosening the system. I also appreciate the simplicity of the BOA system, having used it on some trail running shoes and snowboarding boots, but I forgot how annoying it is to not be able to tighten the ankle area and leave the foot a little looser. It's all or nothing.
Overall, these are a decent choice for some lightweight, protective, and reasonably minimalist boots, but I'm not sure I'd purchase them again due to the donning hassle and the squeaking I experienced. Hopefully, future versions work those issues out and it checks all the boxes without these flaws.
Thanks Guys love the Phantom Step!!!! Little tricky to get on at first but have it down now once they have stretched a bit. Comfy for early season and turkey hunting. Thanks again I will post up some hunting pics with them
Very good boot. Extremely comfortable and durable so far. Just spent 3 days turkey hunting in them and absolutely loved them.
Very comfortable and convenient to throw on and go anywhere, I don’t have a super wide foot but I would imagine some guys may have issues getting them on and off. Other than that I’m waiting on more colors 🤙
Really great boots very comfortable, lightweight, and the waterproofing is great couldn’t ask for a better hunting boot. Will buy more in the future.
